Introducing Dutch Silken Windhounds

May 27, 2009 by silkzoi

Once upon a time (1966) a young girl (me) finally saw the dog of her dreams, a Borzoi in full gallop…but it took her until 1992 to get her first ‘zoi. She lived happily, enjoying showing her Borzoi and one day in 1998 she met Francie and her Silken Windhounds. Those were delightful creatures, resembling a miniature Borzoi. The girl’s Borzoi were still young so no need for addition but 6 years later she had to decide where to get new hounds. April 2004 she travelled to the USA, to pick up a Borzoi puppy and…a little Silken girl. This became the very first Silken Windhound in the Netherlands and she did not go unnoticed: after proving herself a dedicated lure-courser,

she also featured in an article about the breed in one of Holland’s leading dog magazines. She passed her obedience exams with high marks and received enough CAC’s to get the Slovenian Ch. title.

She was mated Spring 2007 but in the end a dead puppy, stuck in the birth canal, poisoned her and the 2nd puppy so I ended the day with empty hands, having only Boyzoi Dutchie left…
Lucky for me, Paladin, a 6mos old Silken puppy was waiting to be picked up so May 2007 saw my sister and I crossing the ocean, visiting SilkenFest in St.Louis and coming home with a very cool puppy. Dutchie was happy to have company again.

As I still wanted to breed, I got the opportunity to pick up an older female so in September, you guessed it, we returned to the US and came home with Yasera.

Miss Yasera obviously wanted to hurry up, she was in season when I took her home and a week later we were off to Switzerland, to have her mated to the charming Elvenking. This resulted in a litter of 7 puppies, born Nov.27 -07.

From these 7, 3 have gone abroad, the other 4 are scattered over Holland, one of them remaining with me, first born Bon Zoi’z Dutch Dandy. My sister Kate and I share the house with Boyzoi Dutchie and the Silkens Paladin, Yasera and Dandy.

Apart from these 3, and Dandy’s littermates, there’s one more Silken boy in the country, black Cleithe who shares the house with blonde Bon Zoi’z Dutch Design.

So, for the time being there are 7 Silken Windhounds in Holland, not a bad score at all!  Conja.
